In the last few years match fixing has reached worrying levels of expansion throughout the Union so as to mobilize the EU institutions in a joint action aimed at stem this phenomenon. Match fixing consists in the act of irregularly influencing the course or the result of a sporting event in order to obtain advantages for oneself or for others, distorting the normal random and unpredictable course associated with the very idea of sports competition. The main reasons are to be found in the achievement of illicit financial advantages (often linked to gambling) or in the achievement of "false" sporting goals such as, for example, avoiding relegation or getting better chances in the playoffs.
